DESCRIPTION: Allium 'Schubertii' ✨ is one of the most extraordinary and visually striking ornamental onions, instantly recognizable for its spectacular, firework-like bloom. Unlike the neat, spherical flower heads typical of most alliums, 'Schubertii' bursts outward in all directions, creating a dramatic and architectural display that looks like an explosion frozen in time. Each star-shaped flower is carried on a pedicel of varying length, giving the entire inflorescence a dynamic, three-dimensional quality. The bloom is a delicate mauve-pink 🌸, with subtle silvery undertones that shimmer in sunlight, and the flower head can reach an impressive diameter of up to 30 cm — making it one of the largest and most sculptural of all ornamental alliums. This variety thrives best in full sun ☀️, where it develops its strongest stems and most vibrant colour. It prefers light, well-drained soil and dislikes overly wet conditions, especially during dormancy. Bulbs are best planted in autumn, from September to November, at a depth of about 10–15 cm, spaced well apart to allow the unique shape of the flower to fully develop. Allium 'Schubertii' is moderately hardy ❄️, typically tolerating temperatures down to –10 °C, but in colder regions, it may benefit from a layer of winter mulch or lifting after flowering if the soil remains too wet during winter. The plant usually blooms from late May to early June, offering a dazzling transition between spring and early summer. While its flower stalk is shorter than that of other alliums — growing to about 40–60 cm — it is strong and stable, supporting the large, airy bloom with ease. The glaucous green leaves are wide and strap-shaped, forming a neat clump at the base, though like most alliums, they begin to fade as the flowering begins. Allium 'Schubertii' is an excellent choice for adding drama and originality to borders, gravel gardens, and container plantings. It pairs beautifully with low-growing perennials, ornamental grasses, or other alliums with more traditional forms, and it’s just as stunning in dried arrangements as it is fresh. Its sculptural quality continues long after flowering, turning into a natural art piece as the dried seed head remains visually striking for months 💫.

STRIKING FEATURES: The inflorescence has a star-shaped, asymmetrical, and “exploded” appearance, with radiating stems of varying lengths. The “ball” can reach up to 30 cm in diameter, making it one of the largest and most eye-catching among ornamental onions. It remains highly decorative even when dry. The stem is relatively short compared to other alliums, measuring about 40–60 cm, but it is strong and stable. The leaves are strap-shaped, broad, and glaucous green, and like most alliums, they tend to wither as the plant begins to bloom.

HOW TO GROW: Flowering occurs in late spring, between May and June. Exposure should be in full sun, although it can tolerate partial shade if necessary. It prefers well-drained soil, light and sandy in texture, as it is sensitive to waterlogging. Planting should be done from September to December, placing the bulbs at a depth of 10–15cm and spacing them 20–25cm apart. Allium schubertii can tolerate temperatures down to –10 to –15 °C. In colder regions, it’s advisable to protect the bulb with a layer of mulch.

USAGE: Ideal for creative borders, modern or Mediterranean-style gardens, fresh and dried floral arrangements, and large containers on sunny terraces ☀️. It pairs beautifully with lavender, aromatic herbs, nepeta, low ornamental grasses, and other alliums with different flowering times — such as ‘Purple Sensation’ or ‘Mount Everest’ — to create a striking and continuous display throughout the season.

PACKAGE: The package contains 4 bulbs of Allium ‘Schubertii’. The bulbs have a circumference of 10/12 cm (about 3 cm in diameter). The packaging features a beautiful illustrative photo and includes planting and flowering information, making it an excellent gift idea.

SELECTION AND QUALITY: The bulbs come with a phytosanitary passport and undergo a strict quality control process to ensure splendid blooms from the first year.
