Description
The Alocasia amazonica ‘Polly’, attractively presented in its Yellow ELHO Vibes Fold pot (Ø14cm, ↕25cm), is a magnificent and popular indoor plant often called the African Mask Plant or Elephant's Ear. Originating from the tropical rainforests of Asia, Africa, and Australia, this small plant brings a dramatic, exotic presence to any setting.
🌿 Foliage and Form
The 'Polly' is an evergreen variety, celebrated for its uniquely beautiful and highly textured foliage which remains year-round. The leaves are the main feature: they are large, glossy, and uniquely arrow- or shield-shaped with distinctive, wavy margins. They display a striking contrast between the deep, dark green (sometimes nearly black) leaf blade and the prominent, silvery-white or pale green veins, giving the plant a stunningly sculptural, mask-like appearance. The plant has a compact, upright, clumping habit and is popular for its ability to add air-purifying properties to your home or office. This plant does not have any spines.
📏 Size and Growth
Your plant stands at approximately 25cm tall, which is typical for the 'Polly' cultivar. While its large cousins can grow huge, the 'Polly' is prized for its moderate indoor size, usually reaching a maximum height of 45cm to 60cm (1.5 to 2 feet). Its size and elegance make it an ideal choice for decorative placement on tables, desks, or shelves.
🌸 Flowering and Fragrance
Like most Alocasia species, the 'Polly' is grown exclusively for its decorative leaves. While it is botanically capable of flowering, this event is very rare when the plant is kept indoors. If it does produce a bloom, it consists of a typical aroid structure: a subtle, inconspicuous spathe (the hood) that encloses a spadix (the spike). These blooms are usually pale green or cream-coloured, do not add significant decorative value, and are not notably fragrant.
💧 Care and Environment
To ensure your 'Polly' thrives, you need to replicate the filtered light and high humidity of its native jungle understory.
-
Light: It prefers bright, indirect light or half-shadow conditions. It thrives under the "canopy" of filtered sunlight. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can easily scorch the delicate, glossy foliage.
-
Temperature and Humidity: It requires a warm, humid environment, similar to its tropical origins. You can help provide this through regular misting or by using a pebble tray.
-
Watering: The plant needs to be kept in a well-draining soil mixture (like one containing peat moss, perlite, and potting mix). It should be watered once a week, ensuring the soil remains moist but not soggy. Consistency is key—never let the soil dry out completely, but absolutely avoid waterlogging.
-
Fertilizing: During the active growing season (typically spring and summer), you should feed the plant with a balanced houseplant fertilizer every month to support its continuous leaf production.
Note: The Alocasia amazonica ‘Polly’ is toxic if ingested. It contains calcium oxalate crystals which can cause painful irritation to the mouth, throat, and stomach. As a decorative houseplant, it should be kept out of the reach of all pets and small children.
