Alocasia amazonica 'Polly'—a striking houseplant that truly earns its common name, the African Mask Plant or Elephant's Ear, due to its dramatic appearance. Your plant is a compact size at around 30cm tall in its Ø12cm pot, making it an excellent statement piece for shelves or tabletops.

🌿 Foliage and Form

The 'Polly' variety is an evergreen perennial, celebrated entirely for its breathtaking foliage. The leaves are the primary feature: they are a deep, saturated, glossy green—almost black in some light—and boast a spectacular contrast with thick, pale-green to almost white veins. The leaves have a distinctly arrow or shield-like shape with dramatically ruffled, wavy edges, giving them an almost metallic, sculptural quality that makes them look like something out of a rainforest painting. This plant does not have spines.

📏 Size and Growth

While the larger Alocasia species can grow quite tall, the 'Polly' is a popular hybrid precisely because it remains relatively compact. Your 30cm plant is nearing its mature size, as it typically reaches a maximum indoor height of about 30 to 60cm (1 to 2 feet) with a similar spread. Its moderate size and upright, clumping habit make it a perfect fit for smaller indoor spaces.

🌸 Flowering and Fragrance

As with most Alocasias, the 'Polly' is grown for its leaves, not its flowers. Although it is capable of flowering, it is a rare event when grown indoors. If it does produce a bloom, it will feature a structure typical of the Arum family: a subtle, pale green or cream-coloured spathe (the hood-like covering) wrapped around a central spadix. These are generally inconspicuous and hold no significant fragrance.

💧 Care and Environment

The 'Polly' requires a bit of thoughtful care to keep its exotic look vibrant. It prefers bright, indirect light; its dramatic dark leaves can easily scorch in harsh, direct sunlight.

The key to keeping it happy is balancing its watering needs. It likes its soil to be consistently moist—never dry, but definitely never soggy. You should water it thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch. It is also a tropical plant that demands high humidity, thriving best in an environment above 50% relative humidity. Brown, crispy leaf edges are often the first sign that the air is too dry. Placing it on a pebble tray or near a humidifier is highly recommended. It also prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 25°C.

Note: The Alocasia amazonica 'Polly', like all members of the Araceae family, is toxic if ingested by humans or pets. It contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation to the mouth, throat, and digestive system. It should be kept strictly for decorative purposes and out of the reach of curious animals and children.
