DESCRIPTION: Ixia plants are native to warm countries. They are mainly grown in pots to protect them from cold and excessive rainfall. The best floral displays are achieved by planting several corms close together, just a few centimeters apart, and watering primarily during flowering. Wind protection is particularly important, as the flowers grow on stems and strong winds can cause breakage. In mild climates, corms can be planted in autumn for flowering in May–June, and can remain undisturbed in the ground. In colder climates or if early summer flowering is desired, it is better to plant corms purchased in spring. During winter, watering is not necessary, and in spring, water should be given moderately. Only during flowering should abundant watering be provided, to prolong bloom time, always avoiding waterlogging. During the growing cycle, it is advisable to fertilize two or three times. Under suitable conditions, the plants usually produce numerous lateral cormlets, and the clump—ideally planned as wide as possible at planting time—will gradually thicken. Only in cases of overcrowding should corms be separated immediately after the end of the growing cycle, and either replanted right away or stored dry in a well-ventilated place. In colder climates, dormant corms can generally be protected with adequate mulching.
