DESCRIPTION: Hyacinth is native to Turkey and Central Asia, where it grows among rocks at an altitude of 2,000 meters. It is a flowering plant mainly used to decorate gardens and flower beds—especially in small, colorful groupings or as edging around larger plants, in borders or flower beds, or even to line paths within the garden itself. Its wide popularity is due to the beautiful flowers it produces, which grow on an extension of the main stem called a raceme that stands upright at the top of the plant. These small flowers are known for their delicate yet intense fragrance, with a fresh scent, and vibrant colors ranging from white to various shades of pink, sky blue to deep blue, violet, red, yellow, and orange. When planted in open ground, the bulbs should be placed at a depth equal to twice their height and spaced following the “one yes, one no” rule. Initially, watering should be minimal. Only during flowering is it necessary to ensure a constant and generous water supply. The soil must be well-drained and rich, but never fertilized with fresh manure or strong slow-release fertilizers. This is because the bulbs are highly susceptible to bacterial infections (especially Erwinia carotovora) and mold if the nitrogen content and free water in the soil are too high. During the growing season, it is advisable to use a balanced liquid fertilizer at reduced doses compared to what is recommended on the package. It is important to provide adequate water until the leaves naturally wither. This ensures that the bulb can regenerate, as it will already contain, by the end of the growing cycle, all the organs and the bud for flowering the following year. Bulbs can remain undisturbed in the soil for several years. If you need to dig them up, they should be dried in the shade and stored in a well-ventilated area until the following autumn. Hyacinths can be grown in all types of soil. If the substrate is too compact and heavy (high in clay), it is advisable to add river sand or volcanic lapilli. The position should be in full sun, but after flowering, some shading is recommended—especially during the hottest hours of the afternoon. For this reason, planting hyacinths under deciduous trees is particularly advantageous.
