Description
This excellent plant is the Zamioculcas zamiifolia, widely known as the ZZ Plant or Zanzibar Gem. It is an incredibly popular houseplant, celebrated for its minimal care requirements and sleek, architectural beauty.
🌿 The Resilient ZZ Plant
-
Appearance: The ZZ Plant is an easy, green houseplant featuring glossy, dark green leaves that grow in a symmetrical, upright manner along thick, robust stems. The leaves are oval-shaped and arranged in an elegant, feather-like pattern. It is native to Zanzibar, Kenya, and Madagascar.
-
Size: This specimen is a good size, standing at approximately 70cm tall and delivered in a 17cm pot. This makes it an ideal size for a smaller floor plant or a large tabletop display.
-
Unique Feature: This houseplant stores water in the stem and in the roots (rhizomes), which is the reason it is so drought-tolerant.
-
Growth Habit: The leaves of the Zamioculcas naturally grow toward the light. When the leaves point toward the ceiling, you know the plant is in the perfect spot.
☀️ Care and Placement
The ZZ Plant's care instructions highlight its low-maintenance nature:
-
Placement (Light): Give the Zamioculcas a spot in semi-shade. A little more sun is not a problem either, though harsh direct sunlight should be avoided as it can burn the leaves.
-
Rotation: Turn the plant regularly to avoid crooked growth as the leaves will consistently grow toward the light source.
-
Watering needs: Because the plant stores water, you don't need to water often.
-
Summer: Water once every two weeks is sufficient.
-
Winter: Water once every 3 weeks.
-
Crucial Note: Always allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot.
