Description
🌿 The Philodendron sodiroi is a rare and eye-catching tropical plant that stands out for its metallic sheen and heart-shaped foliage. Native to Colombia and Ecuador, this species grows as a climbing epiphyte in humid rainforests, and its dramatic leaves make it a prized addition to any plant collection. While it's not typically known by a common name, it's often affectionately referred to by collectors simply as “Sodiroi.”
🍃 The foliage is what truly sets this plant apart. Each leaf is large, heart-shaped, and a deep silvery-green with striking, irregular mottling or marbling in silver or pale grey. The surface has a subtle shimmer under light, and the prominent veining adds texture and depth, giving the plant a luxurious, almost velvet-like appearance. As the plant matures and climbs, the leaves become broader and even more dramatic.
🌸 Flowering is rare indoors, but in ideal greenhouse conditions, Philodendron sodiroi produces a typical aroid bloom: a pale green spathe surrounding a cream to light yellow spadix. These usually appear during the warmer months, but the foliage is undoubtedly the main attraction.
📏 When grown as a houseplant with support such as a moss pole, Philodendron sodiroi can reach a height of 1 to 1.5 meters over time. It starts off relatively compact but becomes increasingly lush as it matures, climbing upward and producing larger leaves along the way.
💧 In terms of care, this plant thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers a well-draining, airy potting mix. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil are dry, and avoid letting it sit in waterlogged soil. It enjoys humidity—ideally over 60%—but can adapt to average indoor conditions with occasional misting or a nearby humidifier.
⚠️ Note: Like most philodendrons, Philodendron sodiroi is toxic if ingested, so it's best to keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
🪴 Format: Upon delivery, the plant has a height of approximately 45 cm (measured including the pot). It is supplied in a nursery pot with a diameter of 15 cm.
