Bring a touch of tropical elegance into your home with the Philodendron melanochrysum, a highly sought-after climbing species native to the humid rainforests of South America. In its natural habitat, it grows beneath the forest canopy, using nearby trees for support as it reaches for dappled light.

Delivered in a 21 cm pot and with a current height of approximately 75 cm, this plant already makes a striking decorative statement.

Unique foliage

This species is loved for its dramatic, velvety leaves featuring:

  • deep green to almost black tones

  • prominent golden veins

  • an elongated, elegant shape

Its foliage gives it an unmistakable, luxurious appearance.

Light requirements

Unlike common Philodendron varieties, melanochrysum does not tolerate low light well. It thrives best in:

  • bright, indirect light

  • partial shade is acceptable, but too little light will reduce leaf size and colour intensity

  • avoid direct sun, which can scorch the velvety surface

Care

This plant is low-maintenance as long as you respect its basic needs:

  • Watering: once per week, keeping the soil slightly moist but never waterlogged

  • Soil: well-draining (peat and perlite mix is ideal)

  • Humidity: appreciates medium to high humidity

  • Fertiliser: balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks during the growing season, diluted according to instructions

Benefits

Like many philodendrons, it helps purify the air by filtering toxins such as formaldehyde and xylene.
