Bring a touch of the countryside to your garden with this delightful set of organic berry plants — one blackberry and one raspberry — that promise months of flavour and beauty. Together, ‘Lochness’ and ‘Malling Promise’ offer a perfect balance of rich, sweet fruit, easy growth, and long-lasting seasonal interest.
‘Lochness’ is a highly regarded thornless blackberry, prized for its heavy yields and smooth, glossy fruits. The berries are large, deep black, and wonderfully aromatic, ideal for fresh snacking, desserts, or homemade jams. The plant forms strong, arching canes that can reach up to 2 metres in height when supported, yet remain easy to manage thanks to the near absence of thorns. In late spring, small white flowers appear among the bright green leaves, followed by clusters of fruit that ripen from midsummer into early autumn. The foliage is deciduous, turning shades of yellow before falling as the season ends.
‘Malling Promise’ is an early-summer raspberry variety celebrated for its reliability and full-bodied flavour. Its medium to large berries are bright red, firm, and packed with sweetness. The canes are upright and robust, typically reaching about 1.5 to 2 metres, and they bear a modest number of soft thorns. As with most raspberries, the plant is deciduous, bursting into leaf each spring before producing a generous harvest in early to mid-summer.
Both plants are easy to grow and thrive in fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of sunshine. They appreciate regular watering during dry periods and benefit from a mulch layer to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. After fruiting, prune out the old canes to encourage strong new growth for the following year. Neither plant is particularly noted for scented blooms, but the abundance of delicious fruit more than compensates.
Note: These berry plants are not considered toxic, though only the ripe fruit is suitable for eating.
