Description
The Actinidia deliciosa ‘Jenny’, commonly known as the hardy kiwi, is a fast-growing, swinging climbing plant that brings a touch of the exotic to any garden while also offering tasty, organically grown fruit. This variety is self-pollinating, making it particularly easy to cultivate. Its origins trace back to China, and in the early 20th century, seeds were brought to New Zealand, where the plant became an important export product and was named after the iconic kiwi bird.
‘Jenny’ produces glossy, heart-shaped foliage that creates a lush, vibrant backdrop throughout the growing season. The climber blooms in May and June with charming white-pink flowers, which are subtly fragrant and add a delicate ornamental touch. The first fruits typically appear in early September, though it may take three to five years before the plant begins to bear. The fruits are oval, covered in a soft hairy skin, and reveal bright green flesh surrounding a white core with a ring of tiny black seeds. Full of vitamin C, these kiwis are not only delicious but also healthy, perfect for fresh eating or desserts.
As a deciduous climber, ‘Jenny’ loses its leaves in winter but quickly springs back to life each spring. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and a sunny, sheltered spot, and regular watering is essential, particularly during dry periods and while the fruit is developing. The plant is generally smooth and free from spines, making it easy to handle, and it grows best when supported against a climbing frame, fence, or pergola.
In addition to its culinary and ornamental appeal, this kiwi plant is grown organically, meaning only natural plant and animal materials have been used during cultivation. The pot and label are made from recycled plastic, offering an environmentally friendly solution for conscious gardeners.
Note: Only the fruit is edible; other parts of the plant are not considered safe to eat.
