DESCRIPTION: Ranunculus asiaticus is native to Anatolia. Its forms with brightly colored flowers in yellow, red, white, orange, and pink were introduced to Europe around the same time as tulips, at the end of the 16th century. The natural forms are the ancestors of modern cultivars. They reach a height of 25–40 cm, have compound, ovoid, deeply divided leaves, and generally double flowers. The tubers should be planted at a depth equal to twice their total height. Each tuber consists of a central crown and curved, claw-like structures. These small nutrient reservoirs, resembling fingernails, must be oriented downward when planting, in a sunny or at least partially sunny location. It is advisable to soak the tubers for two to three hours before planting them in rich, well-draining soil with a moderate amount of organic matter. The spacing between tubers should follow the “one yes, two no” rule. Grouping many plants together yields far better results than scattering them. To support healthy growth, protect the plants from frost. During the growing cycle, it is beneficial to water them every three weeks with a weak nutrient solution (a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants, diluted to half the dose recommended on the label). To maintain uniform plant development, avoid prolonged drought, but also be careful not to let the soil become too moist—especially if the substrate is heavy and poorly draining. Peony-flowered ranunculus varieties bloom in spring. To extend the blooming period, stagger planting times by several weeks using tubers purchased in spring. This way, you can enjoy flowers even into early summer, provided the soil moisture is kept at a moderate level.
