DESCRIPTION: Unlike almost all other lilies, Lilium candidum bulbs must be planted shallow. They develop roots only from the basal plate, which is crucial to keep intact, with the scales firmly attached. The soil must be rich, loose, and highly permeable. Like all true lilies, Lilium candidum cannot tolerate stagnant water—neither around the bulb nor at the root level. Bulbs planted in autumn will immediately develop foliage, which easily withstands winter cold. With the first mild days of spring, the plant resumes growth after its apparent winter dormancy, and the flowering stem begins to rise, reaching—and often exceeding—60-70 cm. The flowers typically begin to open in the second half of May and last quite a long time, especially if watering is consistent during that period. Watering should be directed only at the base of the plant to avoid damaging the flowers and washing away the pollen.

HOW TO GROW: Plant the bulbs about 10-12 cm deep in full sun or partial shade, either in pots or directly in the ground. Space each bulb approximately 10 cm apart. Be sure to use rich, well-drained soil, alkaline or neutral (they dislike acidic soils) and water moderately. Hardiness: good (down to -10°C), but sensitive to stagnant moisture. Bulbs should be planted between September and December. Flowering will occur between June and July (early summer).
