DESCRIPTION: Allium 'Cristophii', also known as Star of Persia, is one of the most striking ornamental alliums, admired for its large, spherical flower heads made up of dozens of star-shaped florets. When in full bloom, it creates a dazzling globe of silvery violet that can span up to 20–25 cm in diameter, adding both structure and a touch of drama to late spring and early summer gardens. This allium thrives in full sun, where it can absorb the warmth and light it needs to develop its signature bloom. It prefers well-drained soil, ideally with a sandy or loamy texture, and once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant. Too much moisture, especially in winter, can lead to bulb rot, so choosing a spot with good drainage is essential. The plant typically reaches a height of about 50 to 70 centimetres, rising on strong, upright stems that hold the globe-shaped flowers proudly above the foliage. Germination from seed can take some time, often a few weeks or even longer, and it's a process best left to patient gardeners, as alliums are most commonly propagated through bulbs. Planting the bulbs in autumn gives them the necessary chilling period and sets the stage for blooming in late May to early June, depending on climate. After flowering, the blooms dry beautifully and remain ornamental in the garden or as part of dried arrangements, offering visual interest even as the plant begins to fade. Allium 'Cristophii' brings a touch of the exotic while requiring very little maintenance, making it a favourite among gardeners looking to add architectural flair and pollinator-friendly colour to borders, gravel gardens, or mixed perennial beds.
