Description
The Alocasia wentii, beautifully presented in its Selin Basket (Ø19cm, ↕65cm), is indeed both stylish and impressive, easily earning its popular nickname, the Elephant Ear. Standing at a respectable 65cm, this plant brings a lush, tropical maturity to any indoor setting.
🌿 Foliage, Form, and Air Quality
This plant is an evergreen perennial, providing consistent beauty throughout the year. The most notable feature is its foliage: the leaves are large, thick, and heart-shaped, giving rise to the "Elephant Ear" moniker. They are typically a dark, lush green, offering a special, deep colour and a robust texture. A key characteristic of the Wentii is the bronze or deep reddish-purple colour often found on the underside of its large leaves, which adds visual depth. The plant has an upright, lush structure. Furthermore, the Alocasia Wentii is a beneficial air-purifying houseplant, helping to keep the air clean and providing oxygen, which certainly contributes to that happy feeling! It does not have any spines.
📏 Size and Growth
At 65cm, your plant is well-sized and mature. The Alocasia wentii is known for its vigour and can easily grow taller indoors, potentially reaching heights of 1.2 to 1.5 metres (4 to 5 feet), making it a truly dramatic, large specimen over time.
🌸 Flowering and Fragrance
The Alocasia wentii is valued entirely for its large, dark leaves. For this reason, flowering is an infrequent event when the plant is kept indoors. If a bloom does appear, it will take the form of the subtle, typical aroid structure: a pale green or cream-coloured spathe (the hood) surrounding a central spadix (the spike). These blooms are inconspicuous and are not notably fragrant.
💧 Care and Environment
Caring for this Elephant Ear involves giving it the consistent warmth and moisture of its native tropical habitat.
-
Placement: Place the Alocasia Wentii in a light place, ideally where it receives bright, indirect sunlight. You must try to avoid direct sunlight, as the large leaves can easily scorch.
-
Drafts: This houseplant does not like drafts, so ensure it is placed away from exterior doors or air vents.
-
Rotation: It will grow towards the light source, so regularly turn the Elephant Ear slightly to ensure the houseplant does not grow crooked, maintaining its beautiful shape.
-
Watering: The plant likes a regular sip of water and thrives in a moist soil. A general guide is a glass of water every week, but always check the soil's moisture level first; it should be consistently moist, but never soggy.
-
Fertilizing: To support its impressive leaf production, give the Elephant Ear some fertilizer twice a month during the active growing season (spring and summer). In winter, when growth naturally slows, reduce this to fertilizing only once a month.
Note: The Alocasia Wentii, like all other Alocasia plants, is toxic if ingested. It contains calcium oxalate crystals which can cause painful irritation. For safety, this beautiful, decorative plant must be kept out of reach of pets and small children.
