The Alocasia 'Regal Shield' is a magnificent hybrid, truly earning its royal name with its impressive size and dramatic, armour-like foliage. Your plant, standing at a striking 90cm tall in its 21cm pot, is already a significant, mature feature that will add robust elegance and an exotic touch to any room.
This plant is an evergreen perennial, ensuring its commanding appearance lasts all year. The foliage of the 'Regal Shield' is its most defining feature: the leaves are enormous, firm, and dramatically heart-shaped, often held upright like a shield. They boast a glossy, deep green colour and a rich texture with prominent, eye-catching veins that often give off a subtle, metallic sheen. The underside of the leaves is usually a gorgeous, contrasting burgundy or purplish-red. The plant has a robust, strong structure and an elegant shape, making it a powerful visual statement. It does not have any spines.
At 90cm, your 'Regal Shield' is already a towering presence. This variety is known for its impressive size and, with proper care, can easily reach an indoor height of 1.5 to 1.8 metres (5 to 6 feet) or more, truly becoming a monumental feature in a well-lit space.
The 'Regal Shield' is cultivated entirely for its large, dramatic leaves. Consequently, flowering is an infrequent and generally uninteresting event when the plant is kept indoors. If a bloom does appear, it will take the form of the subtle, typical aroid structure: a pale green or cream-coloured spathe (the hood) surrounding a central spadix (the spike). These blooms are inconspicuous and are not notably fragrant.
Caring for this large, tropical hybrid requires consistency in light, moisture, and warmth.
Placement: This plant thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Indoors, place it in a well-lit spot but ensure it is away from direct sunlight, especially harsh afternoon sun, which can damage the leaves. Outdoors, it enjoys a shaded location.
Water Requirements: The 'Regal Shield' needs regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist. You must allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Crucially, ensure the pot has good drainage to avoid waterlogging, which is the main cause of root rot. Note that watering needs may decrease slightly in winter when growth naturally slows down.
Humidity: As a large tropical plant, it demands high humidity to keep the margins of those impressive leaves looking pristine.
