Description
The Alocasia amazonica ‘Polly’, presented in its stylish Pink ELHO Vibes Fold pot (Ø14cm, ↕25cm), is a stunning compact houseplant, well-known by its common names, the African Mask Plant or Elephant's Ear. This variety is particularly celebrated for its high-impact, exotic appearance despite its relatively modest size.
🌿 Foliage, Form, and Air Quality
The 'Polly' is an evergreen plant, providing dramatic visual interest all year long. Its primary attraction is its foliage: the leaves are large, glossy, and distinctively arrow-shaped with wavy, ruffled margins. They exhibit a remarkable contrast, featuring a deep, dark green (almost black) background against prominent, silvery-white or pale green veins, making each leaf look like a work of art. The plant grows upright and maintains a bushy, compact form, fitting perfectly into smaller indoor spaces. Beyond its beauty, the Alocasia is also valued for its air-purifying qualities, helping to bring a touch of the rainforest and cleaner air into your home. The plant does not have any spines.
📏 Size and Growth
This plant is quite petite, measuring around 25cm tall, which is typical for the 'Polly' cultivar. While its larger relatives can become towering specimens, the 'Pollo' usually reaches an indoor height of up to 60cm (about 2 feet) at full maturity. This moderate size makes it an ideal statement piece for a desk, shelf, or cabinet.
🌸 Flowering and Fragrance
Alocasias are cultivated almost exclusively for their stunning leaves. While they are capable of producing flowers, this is a rare event indoors. If it does bloom, it will have the typical aroid structure: a subtle, creamy-coloured spathe (the hood) wrapped around a spadix (the spike). These flowers are not showy and are generally not fragrant.
💧 Care and Environment
Hailing from the warm, humid, tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, the 'Polly' thrives when its environment is kept warm and bright.
Light: It prefers bright, indirect light or half-shade. Direct sun, particularly harsh afternoon light, must be avoided as it can easily cause leaf burn on the dark, glossy surface. Its ideal temperature range is between 15°C and 29°C.
-
Watering: The plant prefers a well-draining soil mix and requires regular watering to ensure the soil remains evenly moist but not soggy. A good routine is to water once a week, checking that the top layer of soil has dried out slightly before re-watering. Preventing the plant from sitting in saturated soil is crucial to avoid root issues.
-
Fertilizing: To encourage healthy growth during the main growing season (spring through summer), it is recommended to feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer every two to three weeks.
Note: The Alocasia amazonica ‘Polly’, like others in the Elephant's Ear family, is considered toxic if ingested. It contains calcium oxalate crystals which can cause significant irritation to the mouth and throat. It is essential to keep this beautiful, decorative plant out of reach of curious pets and children.
