The Alocasia lauterbachiana is a truly dramatic and distinctive plant, known for its strong, upright structure and uniquely shaped foliage. Your specimen, standing at an impressive 80cm tall in its 19cm pot, is already a significant, eye-catching feature ready to add a vertical tropical accent to your home.

🌿 Foliage, Form, and Appearance

This plant is an evergreen perennial, ensuring its striking appearance lasts all year. The foliage of the Alocasia lauterbachiana is its most distinguishing feature. The leaves are held upright on stiff petioles, but unlike the heart-shaped leaves of many Alocasias, these are long, narrow, and deeply lobed with wavy, undulating margins—a characteristic that earns it the common nickname Purple Sword Alocasia or Narrow-Leafed Alocasia. The leaf surface is typically a dark, rich green, while the undersides often display a gorgeous, contrasting reddish-purple hue. This contrast adds depth and drama, especially when the plant is viewed from below. The plant maintains a tall, vertical, and sculptural form and does not have any spines.

📏 Size and Growth

At 80cm, your plant is already quite tall, making a bold statement. The Alocasia lauterbachiana is known for its height and can easily reach an impressive indoor height of 90cm to 1.5 metres (3 to 5 feet) or more at full maturity, provided it has excellent light and care.

🌸 Flowering and Fragrance

The Alocasia lauterbachiana is cultivated for its magnificent, sword-like leaves. As with most plants in this genus, flowering is an infrequent event when grown indoors. If it does produce a bloom, it will feature the subtle, typical aroid structure: a pale green or cream-coloured spathe (the hood) wrapped around a central spadix (the spike). These blooms are generally inconspicuous and are not notably fragrant.

💧 Care and Environment

To encourage this towering plant to thrive, you need to provide conditions similar to the tropical understory where it originates:

  • Light: It requires bright, indirect light to maintain its upright structure and rich colouration. While it can tolerate a bit of half-shade, insufficient light will cause the stems to stretch and weaken. Crucially, avoid direct, strong sunlight which will scorch its dramatic leaves.

  • Watering: The plant prefers a well-draining soil that is kept consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top couple of inches of soil to dry slightly before watering again. As a large tropical plant, it also demands high humidity to prevent those long, elegant leaves from developing dry tips or edges.Temperature: It appreciates consistent warmth and should be protected from cold drafts.

Note: The Alocasia lauterbachiana, like all members of the Araceae family, is toxic if ingested. It contains calcium oxalate crystals which can cause painful irritation. For safety, it must be kept out of the reach of pets and small children
