The red part is actually a modified leaf that surrounds a small central spike. Each one stays bright for a long time before eventually drying out.
It needs a bright spot in the room to keep producing color, but direct sun through a window will burn the leaves. Keep it away from cold doorways in winter and out of the direct flow of radiators or air conditioners.
Water it only when the top layer of soil feels dry. Checking the dirt with your finger is the easiest way to tell—if it feels damp, leave it alone. The main mistake to avoid is letting excess water sit in the saucer underneath, which causes the roots to rot.
The plant is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, so it should be placed on a high shelf or stand where pets cannot reach it.
