🌵 The Exotic Rhipsalis 'Red Coral' (Mistletoe Cactus)

The Rhipsalis 'Red Coral' is a stunning and unique indoor plant that belongs to the cactus family, yet defies the typical desert cactus image. It's an epiphytic cactus, meaning it naturally grows on trees in the rainforests of Central and South America, absorbing nutrients and moisture from the air. This plant is a popular choice for all enthusiasts due to its low-maintenance nature and tropical style.

Foliage and Form

The most striking feature of the 'Red Coral' is its vibrant red color and flowing, coral-like shape. Its stems are cylindrical, slender, and grow in a trailing and cascading habit, which is how it earned its name, as it resembles underwater coral. This makes it an excellent choice for hanging baskets or shelves. Unlike its desert relatives, it does not have spines. This is an evergreen plant, providing continuous color. It is currently about 25 cm (10 inches) high.

Flowering and Scent

Rhipsalis plants typically produce small, often white or yellow, inconspicuous flowers along the stems. Its primary appeal is its colorful stem structure. It is not known for a strong fragrance.

Height and Spines

It maintains a beautiful, trailing growth habit. While its stated height is 25 cm, this primarily refers to the length of the trailing stems, which will continue to grow and cascade. As noted, it does not have spines.

Care and Requirements

Rhipsalis is highly adaptable. It thrives in semi-shady spots or half shadow/sun, making it perfect for indoor areas that receive indirect sunlight. It can even tolerate low light environments, though brighter, indirect light will best enhance its vibrant red color. It should be planted in well-draining soil, ideally a mix of peat moss and perlite, to mimic its airy, epiphytic root environment.

Watering

Unlike desert cacti, the Rhipsalis requires slightly more moisture, but still needs caution. It requires watering once every 8–10 days, but you must allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Fertilize monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted liquid fertilizer, but avoid feeding in winter.

Note: The Rhipsalis 'Red Coral' is strictly for decorative purposes only and is known for its air-purifying properties. It is safest to keep all houseplants out of the reach of curious pets and small children.
